After law school and before starting his practice, Terry Mosteller spent seven years in the nonprofit sector, handling policy advocacy, drafting legislation and meeting with congresspeople. The organizations he worked with often needed help navigating legal concerns, as most nonprofits do. Although it wasn’t specifically part of his role, Mosteller drew on his law degree to help them address those issues.

Having worked inside nonprofits gives Mosteller an edge – and an uncommon niche – in counseling 501(c)(3) organizations on board governance, IRS compliance, fundraising, contract management, employment, strategic planning, intellectual property, for-profit subsidiaries and other legal issues. He helps startup nonprofits apply for 501(c)(3) status and assists established nonprofits that are merging or closing to do so properly. He also can assist with documentary film legal clearance for tax-exempt organizations that wish to tell their stories through film. He also frequently helps nonprofits buy, sell and lease real estate.

“Nonprofit organizations often have their missions hindered because of legal issues,” Mosteller said. “The right counsel will support and advance the mission while helping them navigate those matters correctly.”

At Levy Craig, Mosteller focuses his practice on 501(c)(3) organizations and on small- to mid-size companies, particularly in real estate and contractual matters.

“Real estate deals seem like they should be routine, but every transaction has its oddities,” Mosteller said. “I problem solve uniquely for each deal, helping clients get done what they want to do.”

An entrepreneur at heart, Mosteller operated his own law firm for eight years before joining Levy Craig, building a reputation for client-centered and mission-focused efficiency. The win for him, then and now, is achieving day-to-day accomplishments that allow his clients to deliver significant results for the people they serve.

“I have a genuine love for improving the community,” Mosteller said. “The legal counsel I provide my clients is the means by which I can support businesses and nonprofits and achieve that goal. I have great clients that are doing amazing work to make our community a better place. Working with them is incredibly rewarding.”
